Houston car accident lawyer Brad T. Wyly is urging parents to use Mays National Youth Traffic Safety Month as a time to talk about safe driving practices with their teen drivers.

A U.S. Senate Resolution sponsored by Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-Texas) and other lawmakers designates May as National Youth Traffic Safety Month. The campaign to raise safe driving awareness comes at the start of the deadliest period of the year for teen drivers.

According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) statistics, 422 teens die in car crashes during each of the summer months. Thats compared to 363 teen driving deaths that occur during each of the non-summer months.

Perhaps due to immaturity and inexperience, Wyly said, young drivers may be more likely to engage in risky behavior such as speeding, drag racing, failing to wear a seat belt or driving while texting, using a cell phone or consuming alcohol.

In some cases, teen drivers may simply have too many other teens in the car with them, the Houston personal injury attorney said.

Wyly pointed to a recent AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety study that found that the fatality risk for drivers ages 16-17 increases by 44 percent when they carry one passenger younger than age 21. The risk doubles with two passengers under age 21, and it quadruples with three or more passengers 21 or younger, the study revealed.

When a car is full of teenagers, the driver is likely to be distracted at some point, and that obviously creates a higher risk of accidents, injuries or deaths, Wyly said. Its certainly one of the points to emphasize when discussing safe driving with your teen.

When a person is injured in a car accident because of a drivers negligent or reckless behavior, Texas law allows the victim to be compensated for their losses, including vehicle damage, medical expenses, lost wages and pain and suffering, Wyly said.

The Washington Times in conjunction with independent political analyst John Zogby and JZ Analytics today launches a new series of 2012 presidential election surveys that will track the primary and general election candidates, issues and public opinion.

An attack in a Jewish neighborhood of Brooklyn is being investigated as a New York hate crime by the New York Police Department’s Hate Crimes Task Force, reported NY1 on November 12.

Vandals set three cars ablaze in Midwood on November 11. A sidewalk and park benches nearby also were spray-painted with anti-Semitic graffiti, including Nazi swastikas. “KKK” was painted on a van, according to the New York Daily News. (11/11)

Also, reported the NYDN, a subway sign was defaced and a Jewish man recalled being threatened by two hate-spewing men in Midwood.

Earlier this month, six swastikas were painted on a synagogue and two library branches in Queens, reported the Queens Tribune. (11/10)

Recently, the Anti-Defamation League released a report of anti-Semitism statistics for New York City and New York State. In 2010, the ADL counted 133 anti-Semitic incidents citywide. This was one more recorded incident than the year before.

In New York City, the most anti-Semitic incidents were reported in Brooklyn, which had 53. Manhattan was next with 52, according to the ADL.
